He managed to grab her wrist, whispering unintelligible words before drifting

off again, his hand falling limply back to the ground.

Footsteps scuffed behind her, Hank’s shadow blocking out the sun. “He put up

one hell of a fight, I’ll grant him that much. But without that beast inside him…” The

man laughed. “He’s not quite a match for all of us.”

“You’re lucky he’s still alive. He can’t heal the way shifters do.”

“Don’t lie to us. We know what he is.”

“He isn’t anything, yet, other than a breath away from death.” Charlie studied

the restraints. “Silver chains?” She shook her head. “Do you even know what you’re

dealin’ with?”

“I know far more than you think. Silver’s a weakness for those things.”

“He’s still human, you fool. And just placin’ silver against a werewolf’s skin

doesn’t weaken it. God, if this is how you’ve been dealin’ with potential skin walkers,

you’re lucky you’re not all dead.”

“Never gotten this close to a live one before and never prior to them changin’.”

Hank stepped closer, grabbing her arm and yanking her to her feet. “And the only one

who’s going to die is your mate, here, after he turns. That’s when we’ll bleed him dry

and have the real power.”

Pain pulsed along her arm where his fingers bruised her skin, the tight hold

aggravating the pounding inside her head. She sucked in a labored breath, mentally

telling her mates to hurry up before tugging against Hank’s grip. If Harrison got even

a notion in his mind that the other man had hurt her…touched her. She’d felt their

increased connection since he’d scratched her shoulder. But she didn’t need that to

know his werewolf would seize control. “I told you not to touch me.”

“Already let you see your man. Reckon our deal’s done.”

“You’re dumber than I thought. Thinkin’ you can contain a skin walker with

silver chains. Touchin’ me when I clearly warned you not to.”

Hank sneered at her. “Maybe you’re right? Seems silly to keep the guy alive

when we have you. Pete says you’re going to turn with the next full moon.” He

snorted. “Bettin’ you’d be less of a risk, being a woman and all. Who knows? You

behave from now until then and maybe we won’t kill you. We don’t need all of your

blood.” He pulled her against his chest, his whiskey-laden breath washing over her

face. “And seein’ as you belong to me, now, I can touch you all I want.”

She scanned around the area, sizing up his gang. “How many men do you have,

Hank? A dozen. Fifteen, maybe?”

“Close to twenty. Why? You gonna take us all on, querida?”

She lifted her lips into a smile. “I’m good, but I’m not foolish. And you’ve

overlooked one thing.”

“What’s that?”

“You and Pete were wrong. I’m not one of them. And I’m not Weston’s mate.”

“Pete never gets that wrong. If he sees black around you then that makes you

one of them. And there’s no other reason you’d risk everything to come here…” Hank

nodded at Weston. “Ask to see him, if you’re not his mate. I know how it works.” He

jerked her closer, smiling when Pete and another man moved in behind her, seizing

her arms.
